With the help of a polished mirror

The authoritarian actions that result from being caught in the word are attempts to banish that word that is used as a label, but any person is so much more that just one word. The word remains, nearly immortal, but the person labelled with the word is discriminated against, and sometimes this actually can turn the projected word into a self-fulfilling prophesy.

The Australian: How the West was one [August 06, 2005]

The ‘rule of law’ is about ensuring that everyone who is subject to the power of a state is treated in accordance with human rights – the separation between ‘legal’ and ‘illegal’ should not affect the quality of the due processes under the law of a state that that person is subjected to. Howard carries on as if he thinks that the rule of law means that Howard makes laws and the state must enforce them, and that’s about the extent of it.

When the issue of Pauline Hanson publicly airing racist comments was put to Howard early in his prime-ministership, he decide to remain silent on the issue and state that Hanson’s expression of her views was a matter of free speech – and even claimed that the situation showed a retreat of political correct language.

There is a difference between having a political order where people are free to choose and adopt their own beliefs and values, and a political order that sanctions some beliefs and values, and tries to impose those beliefs and values on the rest of the community.
