On an individual level we affirm and support those that are close to us (family values), we work with others in our community (Christian values or values), while at the public and state level we work through ideas and institutions to try to effectively test assumptions and think through alternatives for anything that does not stand up to reason (liberal values).

For the previous post on the ePassport, with the term RFID in the post, the ad space threw up a few links for buying RFID tags for pets, and things like that.

The Australian: Steve Lewis: Beazley had no choice but to support anti-terror laws : “Beazley is prepared to wear the opprobrium of his caucus (or at least that of some of the more vocal members from the Left) to ensure that brand Labor is not damaged by the anti-terror bill.”

These preventative detention orders are supposed to be there to prevent an immanent terror attack – but tell me, if someone was definitely going to commit an act of terrorism, that made it imperative to impose a term in detention, then wouldn’t that person have at least some kind of evidence for the planning and execution of an act of terrorism – and so they could be charged with the existing laws.

Margo Kingston’s Webdiary – smh.com.au: “Any contemporary nuclear debate in Australia must take cognizance of this fact: So far as our neighbours are concerned, enhanced reliance on nuclear power is a given. “The crucial question therefore becomes: how can Australia, in a world – and particularly in a region – of widespread nuclear powered electricity generation and concomitantly increasing nuclear know-how, contribute to assuaging real concerns with respect to reactor safety, nuclear waste management and nuclear weapons proliferation?

chilout : children out of detention I am concerned that community mandatory detention, where families are still confined in motels or houses by force, is still a form of incarceration. This idea doesn’t solve the problems with mandatory detention, but given that Mr Howard is only going to tinker at the edges of the detention policies, would one temporary way to improve the lot of refugees be to allow them, even while in mandatory detention in community, a few hours each day where they are free to leave the house or motel.

I am working to develop a new model for an Australian Republic and have even designed a couple of new green and gold flags that may be suitable for a Republic. So with this blog I will be commenting on whatever seems noteworthy, and hopefully start to flesh out what could be called a new liberal-democratic paradigm that goes along with this new model for a republic.
