Solar Energy Summary

It might be an idea to summarise the *Solar Energy category in Pharoz and put some of these posts into the Becrux (Mimosa) blog with links to the relevant Pharoz posts. The basic categories would be something like: Energy efficiency at a network level Storage of electrical energy Transport of electrical energy Fixing electrical energy Transverse horizontal wind turbines Transition from coal power to renewables (system wide) Carbon dioxide – Removal, transformation and disposal of CO2 Applying usable kinetic energy to spacecraft through remote lasers There is a separate post for each of the broad categories above with links to the relevant Pharoz posts.

Transport of electrical energy

2/10/2008 Solar Collector Satellites Some Pharoz posts: 24/10/2006 Solar Farms 10/04/2006 Analog to digital energy transmission *** The basic idea is that the light from a laser made with a gas will be at a frequency such that the light from that laser can be absorbed by that same gas in a special cavity at a distance removed from the laser, and thus cleanly catch the energy from the laser so to speak.

Wind Turbine Tweak

Energy might be extracted from wind turbine blades spinning at slightly variable speeds from motion of the blades moving alternatively forwards and backwards, rather that all the energy being extracted from the rotation of the blades.

Instruction-set surfaces

Imagine if you could design a compound that when excited by a photon of a specific frequency the additional energy from that photon moves around in that compound but dissipates or is mechanically damped in one direction only;

A semblance of gravity

If people become accustomed to living in space in a situation similar to earth with a downward acceleration like gravity due to centrifugal forces, they would become accustomed to seeing fixed stars in constant and fast motion around them with only the polar star, planet or object directly above or below the circle or spiral being stationary, like a pole star on earth.

Transmitting kinetic energy through lasers

If you could have such kinds of lasers that could work to apply suitable amounts of kinetic energy to spacecraft, it may be possible to set up networks of ground based, satellite or even moon based stations that could move spacecraft around in a coordinated way.

Industrial scale CO2 sinks

Removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through pre-industrial means, by only planting trees for example, can not keep pace with the carbon dioxide emissions that our modern society is placing in the atmosphere. A carbon dioxide sink is a process that takes carbon dioxide, as well as other things such as water and energy, and turns the chemical components of carbon dioxide into something else.

Removing CO2 from the atmosphere

The important point is that renewables are needed to push these power stations into zero CO2 emission power stations or even to turn these power stations into net CO2 sinks.

Environmental politics

Perhaps if conventional power stations of today are progressively retrofitted to 1) capture CO2 and temporarily store it, and then 2) strip the carbon out for solid disposal of the carbon, perhaps powered through solar energy, then, perhaps 3) power stations might be able to continue operating as plants to remove CO2 from the atmosphere when they are no longer required for fossil fuel energy production.

Rollie-pollie politicing

Energy security is about having energy storage to such a capacity to meet your energy needs, as well as a way to replenish the energy that is used in a timely manner. A superficial analysis of energy needs and energy security would fuse the issues of energy storage and energy sources.

Paradigm shifts

What is happening with these new ideas and perspectives on this blog could be described as possible beginnings of paradigm shifts, similar to what has happened occasionally in the sciences.

Dynamic electro-magnetic storage

A logical extension of the idea of a series of electrical and magnetic storage components arranged in a circle such that a relatively large amount of energy can be periodically cycled through them is to see if some of the components could be switched to work in two or more loops at the same time.

Crude argument

The thing that makes fossil fuels so attractive is that when you extract and use them you end up with more net usable energy at the end of the process, even if it is thermal and of low quality.

Hydrogen

One strategy that would keep the efficiency of the power station as it is, and keep the certainty of the carbon power station supply that is required as it is, would be to try to source the energy needs for capturing and processing the wastes of carbon power stations from renewable energy sources.

Nuclear power in Victoria

If there is a goal of making the market feasible for the introduction of nuclear power, then it would be in the interests of the large power companies concerned to try to introduce inefficiencies into the energy production system to keep nuclear power cost effective.

Energy needs analysis

It barely needs to be said (except during Howards reign in Australia) that if we are going to change over our energy systems so that they are sustainable with regard to global warming then we have to examine the requirements for a sustainable energy system, compare that to what we have now and then devise strategies to move toward the more sustainable energy systems.

Solar Powered closed cycle Gas Turbines

With carbon credits not only will a power utility that owns fields of solar cells be able to sell that electricity to consumers, but with carbon credits there may be a crossover time after which the carbon credits accumulated for solar cells may exceed the cost of installation for those solar cells a solar cell company may make more money from carbon credits for the arrays of solar cells than what it charges its customers for electricity.
