It is barely a couple of days since the writ for the by-election in Higgins following the resignation of Peter Costello was issued. It simply is not appropriate for the Government of the day to entice leading opposition politicians out of parliament with plum job offers. If Peter Costello were to have taken up a position for a private company I would have less of a problem with his hasty resignation from parliament. Even then, you would have to ask why he left mid-term and the public should expect a reasonable answer in reply. Pointing out Mal’s personality and style is not an acceptable answer.

Is this the way that Costello expected Howard would leave parliament when Howard was to hand over the Prime Ministership to him?
