Facebook will be used to shape the nation’s official cultural policy.
AUSTRALIANS have an opportunity to shape the nation’s official cultural policy.
Federal Arts Minister Peter Garrett launched the online forum last week to invite submissions on the question: ”What positive steps would you like to see to advance Australian culture?”
…In a wide-ranging speech last week outlining the need for such a policy, Mr Garrett also called for a national discussion about Australian culture – how it was seen and understood, as well as how it was funded.
The notion of Australian culture was very broad, ”and while the arts are a core component of culture, culture is more than just the arts”, he said.
”It is the embodiment of values, traditions, expressions and, ultimately, hopes and it manifests in and through many different mediums and across a very wide landscape…”

What is the basis for the unwritten Social Contract between Australians? That’s a difficult question. At the moment I think it is heavily mediated (and manipulated) by the mass media and it has a populist flavour to it. In ads We Trust. Especially the chick with the cheesy grin.
