7gs Flags

Just to post a reminder about these flag designs on this blog. The name Seven Golden Stars stands for a series of green and gold flags that I have designed with Australian symbols. The seven stars on the flags include the five brightest stars of the Southern Cross, the Commonwealth Star and the sun from the Aboriginal flag.

Both the Southern Cross and the Commonwealth Star feature on the current Australian flag, a defaced blue ensign:

My new 7gs design is below:

There is another version that is charged with the Australian Coat of Arms:

7gs Flag with Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms is usually shown on a white background. The green background of these 7gs flags highlight the colour of the wattle flowers on the Coat of Arms. While the wattle belongs to the Acacia genus an old way of referring to wattle is as a Mimosa (check out the OED entry for Mimosa if you what to verify that).

One suggestion that some republicans have is to replace the Queens Birthday holiday, which doesn’t fall anywhere near the Queen’s birthday, with a holiday on Wattle Day on the first of September. The third of September also happens to be the day when the current Australian flag was first flown about a century ago, and some people have been pushing to have that day called Flag Day. There’s got be be enough around that time for a long weekend. For all the symbolism and discussion about design of flags, which is quite difficult to get right, the prospect of a long weekend would stand out above anything else as being most important for many Australians.

[More ideas about the importance of a national holiday for republicans is in an article at the Copernican Forum.]
